Groove Of The Week # 2 : Funky Micro-Displacement

Second instalment of the groove of the week series! I hope you enjoy! It’s a fun little beat in 4/4 that has a mini displacement over the last five sixteenths of each bar for a funky sixteenth “late” backbeat!

Keep hittin’ things!
~Aaron

[..YouTube..] That’s a really interssting groove, I tried playing it, but i noticed the displacement isnt the hard part, getting the snare right after the 4 is the hard part.
the displacement isnt that hard, because starting at the 3, your right hand is basically a paradiddle but with an extra 16th note at the end.
but the snare feels weird, because i’m not used to play the snare as an accent there, and skipping the 4.

  7. [..YouTube..] @oCyfiuso hahaha indeed it is 😛

  13. [..YouTube..] @kevinyo4 Good call man! That’s awesome that you didn’t have an issue with the displacement aspect.

To get used to having the snare on the E of four, I’d suggest spending some extra time on the example with the straight 8th hats. Embellish it, have fun with it and keep the snare there until it’s comfortable. Then start mixing up with the hihats after. 🙂

  77. [..YouTube..] @thesmik Man, I totally know. I just got it back up and running about an hour ago. I have all that stuff available, it’s just not linked back yet.

This involved a full re-install of my entire site. It’ll be up, just not quite yet. I gotta put that down for maintenance app on there haha.

In the mean time I’m uploading a super quick tiny shot of what the new video angle is 😀

[..YouTube..] A lot of times when I listen to unconventional drum beats like this that have time signatures based on numbers other than 3’s or 4’s I get this uneasy feeling similar to when I take shorter breaths. Do you ever feel this way? Do you think humans are hard wired to feel more comfortable in beats of 3’s and 4’s over other numbers? or do you think it has to do with us being more familiar with 3’s and 4’s and so we keep expecting it to resolve differently?

  82. [..YouTube..] Very cool question / observation! I definitely agree with your second option where we are just far more used to hearing things in a certain way that our brains expect certain resolve points and such.

It’s these expectations that make rhythmic illusions possible!

  86. [..YouTube..] Yeah man! There’s three assumptions your mind makes when it hears anything.

Take one of the most basic beats around a four on the floor rock groove. When you hear it, your brain assumes you’re in 4/4, it assumes the first note was beat one and that your subdivision was eighth notes.

All of these things can be untrue 😉
